Lasers

It is becoming increasingly popular to use lasers to contour the body in noninvasive ways. In the last few years, the FDA approved a laser that uses laser energy to heat the fat that is in the abdominal area and other areas of the body. Currently, the FDA has approved the use of a laser that targets fat in the areas of the body that are affected by obesity, including the back and inner thighs and the submental area. Lasers that use 1060 nm light energy can destroy stubborn fat cells. It is non-invasive and looks very natural. FDA approves a new type of laser that uses a cooling system that helps to eliminate discomfort and minimizes the risk that the skin is damaged. Results from this treatment can be seen as early as 6 weeks after treatment; the final result can be achieved in as little as 12 weeks after treatment. It was found that HIFU devices had excellent safety characteristics and were well tolerated by patients; some patients complained of some slight discomfort.

Before the advent of the 1060-nm diode laser, patients used a technique called low-level laser therapy (LLLT). It is a multi-head device that rotates to deliver high-level laser treatment on specific areas of the body. It has five rotating diode laser heads that are able to deliver high-level laser treatment. It is able to work at a wavelength of 635 nm. Patients typically have three to five sessions of HIFU per month, but it may take more than four or five sessions per year to achieve results as good as those obtained with LLLT. Low-level laser therapy is unique because it does not cause the body to physically change because the tissue being treated is heated; rather, it causes tiny pores in adipose cells that allow lipids to leak out of them and cause fat loss. LLLT causes adipocytes that are targeted to be instantly destroyed, so results are seen as soon as the treatment is completed; however, because of the fact that adipocytes are never killed, it is believed that the recurrence of fat deposits is greater than for other fat reduction modalities. LLLT can cause temporary results; however, long-term or permanent results are not expected to be achieved with LLLT. It is important to understand that results will be temporary, and this is either a benefit or a disadvantage, depending on the patient's goals. Some patients prefer instant results that gradually decrease in size and become less visible over time; others prefer results that gradually increase in size and become more visible over time, such as with HIFU and RF.

Complications with LLLT are less severe and more frequent than those that may occur with other body contouring procedures; several studies have shown that there are no adverse effects of LLLT treatment. Some patients experienced discomfort when they urinated or felt a pain or tingling sensation when they tried to urinate; these symptoms were temporary and resolved spontaneously. Despite the fact that lipids released during LLLT are absorbed through the lymphatic system, no studies have shown that LLLT affects cholesterol levels in the blood.
